This was a very interesting and challenging shoot. DLR Group is a company of architects, engineers, and designers with a large office in Seattle. As part of their new website installation, they wanted new portraits of all of their employees. I was lucky enough to be involved.
Their needs were to have a formal and casual of each person. The subject was to be on the left of the image in a horizontal frame with real world backgrounds out of focus and different for each shot. So I did a different portrait every 5 minutes with different lighting for each portrait for two days. These are some of my favorite results.
I now call portraits like this Cinematic Portraits. It is very reminiscent of a movie image with the subject to one side and lots of negative space in a horizontal frame. I have also heard them called Bokeh Portraits. For those not heavily into photography, Bokeh is a Japanese word used to describe the out of focus characteristics of a photograph or lens used to take the photograph. Photography gear nuts (including me) love to talk about bokeh.
